What are the Best Things about Being Over 50?

By on Aug 25, 2016 |

“Are you tired, run down, and listless? Do you poop out at parties? Are you unpopular? The answer is in this little bottle. Vitameatavegamin.” Remember this I Love Lucy episode? Those are the only parts of being over 50 that stink. Some of the most liberating aspects of being over 50 are well, who doesn’t need an AARP membership? You can get discounts and I am not too proud to use mine for hotel reservations. Also, after 50, you actually see the benefits of being in Triple A Car Club. Did you know it will pay for itself with the benefits and discounts for hotels, car rentals, etc. Another benefit of being over 50 is not feeling guilty about saying “No” to anything you don’t want to do. Removing words from sentences like, “I ought to”, I need to”, and “I should” is liberating. Once you are over 50 you know why you can eliminate these from your vocabulary. I also like that I can wear...

If I had been born in the late 1800’s

One of my Facebook friends posted a Which Character on Little House on the Prairie Would You Be quiz. I took the quiz and I got Miss. Beadle, the teacher. I had to laugh at that because this past May my husband, daughter, and I visited Discovery Park of America in Union City, TN. They had a Frontier Village set up like a small town. It had a Little House on the Prairie vibe to it and was so interesting. There was a general store, a doctor’s office, blacksmith shop, a grist mill, and houses. All of these buildings were fully furnished with period furniture and props. There was a schoolhouse, too. I took one step into the schoolhouse and although the windows were open it was hot as blue blazes in there. I told my daughter that there was no way that I could learn one single thing in that hot box. Now that I have taken the quiz and found out that I am Miss Beadle I have to laugh because...

This is the last dream…I promise.

As I mentioned in my last post other people’s dreams are boring. So here is one more. I truly believe that God can speak to us in many ways. I guess He knows the only time I am still and my mouth is not running is when I am asleep. So I will share one more dream for you to enjoy/endure. It was 1990. I had just given birth four weeks earlier to my second child. I had a full time job that paid well, had great health insurance ( that was the main perk), and a three year old little boy. I was at the point of maternity leave where I could not make myself want to go back to work and leave these two little boys at day care. I worried about turning in my notice. I worried about our income being cut in half. I worried that when I returned to work at some date in the future that I would not have the ever increasing technology skills needed to re-enter the job market at the same level. I was...

Other people’s dreams are so boring. So let me tell you about mine. I truly believe that God can speak to us in dreams. I read once that if the dream is one that is as vivid to you days, months, years later it was probably a message from God. This particular dream happened 20 years ago. My youngest was a baby. I was mired in the drudgery that is the life of a stay at home mom. I felt like I had no purpose in life. Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose? One night I had a dream. .In the dream I was in turmoil about all of the above. An angel appeared. The angel appeared as a floaty, light filled, peaceful being and I willingly touched her garment and I began to float until we reached a door. This was a rough hewn door with big, black, crudely designed latches and hinges. On the door was a handmade wire hanger with a long robe made of a rough flax/linen type fabric. I immediately...
